This explorer starts with the whisky volume and ABV in your glass, then recalculates the estimated strength as you change the amount of water. It is useful when you want to experiment incrementally instead of choosing one target ABV in advance.

The calculation

The explorer treats the amount of pure alcohol in the original pour as constant and divides it by the new total liquid volume. In simplified form, final ABV equals starting ABV multiplied by starting volume, divided by starting volume plus added water.

Why the number is an estimate

The arithmetic is appropriate for practical dilution, but volume mixing is not perfectly additive at laboratory precision. A home tasting does not need to imply that level of precision. The tool therefore reports results to one decimal place.

Use taste rather than a target number alone

A whisky may become more expressive after a small water addition and less enjoyable after a larger one. The calculation tells you the estimated strength, not the sensory optimum. Add water gradually and record the amount if you want to reproduce the experiment.
