Ardbeg Distillery
Ardbeg is an operating Islay malt distillery on the island’s south coast. Its modern identity is closely associated with heavily peated single malt, but the useful story is broader: the distillery has passed through periods of closure and revival, expanded its stillhouse in the twenty-first century and now operates four stills rather than the earlier pair.
History and development
Ardbeg dates its legal establishment to 1815. Its official history records a long sequence of ownership and operating changes rather than uninterrupted expansion.
The distillery closed in 1981 and later resumed limited production. Glenmorangie plc acquired Ardbeg in 1997 and restarted full production. The modern revival therefore belongs to a much later chapter than the nineteenth-century founding date alone suggests.
Ardbeg completed a new stillhouse in 2021. The project increased the number of stills from two to four and doubled distillation capacity according to the distillery’s own history.
Production context
Ardbeg produces Single Malt Scotch Whisky and is best known for a heavily peated style. Peat level should still be treated as one production variable rather than a complete description of the whisky, because fermentation, distillation, cut points, cask selection and maturation all influence the final aroma and flavour.
The 2021 stillhouse expansion is especially relevant when comparing older and newer production eras. More capacity does not by itself imply a different flavour profile, but it is an important physical change in how much spirit the distillery can make.
