Glenfiddich Distillery

Glenfiddich is a Speyside malt distillery in Dufftown founded by William Grant. The distillery’s own history records first spirit running on Christmas Day 1887 after Grant, his family and a stone mason built the site. It remains associated with William Grant & Sons and has retained production support functions such as on-site coppersmithing and cooperage.

History and development

William Grant began building the distillery in 1886 with help from his seven sons, two daughters and a stone mason. Glenfiddich records the first spirit running from the stills on Christmas Day 1887.

The distillery added on-site coppersmiths in 1957. In 1959 it established a dedicated cooperage. Those functions matter because copper still maintenance and cask work directly support production rather than serving only as heritage displays.

Glenfiddich’s history also records its 1960s push to market single malt whisky internationally at a time when blended Scotch dominated many export markets.

Production context

Glenfiddich produces Single Malt Scotch Whisky in Speyside. Its official visitor material identifies the Robbie Dhu spring as its water source and highlights copper pot stills, warehouses, cooperage and coppersmithing as parts of the distillery operation.

The distillery’s range covers many maturation approaches. That means the Glenfiddich name should not be reduced to one flavour shorthand: age, cask programme and marrying strategy change across expressions.
