Glenmorangie Distillery

Glenmorangie is an operating Highland malt distillery in Tain, Ross-shire. The distillery traces its modern foundation to William and Anne Matheson in 1843 and is strongly associated with unusually tall copper stills and an extensive programme of cask maturation and finishing.

History and development

Glenmorangie states that farmer William Matheson and his wife Anne established the distillery in 1843 in the Scottish Highlands near Tain.

The distillery developed around a long-serving local workforce historically known as the Men of Tain. The modern site continues to use the Distillers of Tain identity while operating with a larger team and contemporary production facilities.

The site now includes The Lighthouse, a dedicated innovation distillery used alongside the main production operation.

Production context

Glenmorangie is widely associated with very tall copper pot stills. The producer itself uses the tall-still profile as a defining feature of its distillation identity, while the exact sensory effect should still be understood alongside reflux, cut points, fermentation and other variables.
