Laphroaig Distillery

Laphroaig is an operating Islay malt distillery on the island’s south coast. The distillery dates its founding to 1815 and remains closely associated with heavily peated single malt, floor malting and a production site that still uses its historic kilns.

History and development

Laphroaig traces its foundation to brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston in 1815. The distillery grew from a farming operation in which barley was an important crop, and whisky became the more successful part of the business.

The distillery’s history includes long periods of family ownership as well as the influential twentieth-century management of Bessie Williamson, who became owner and manager after joining the business in the 1930s.

Laphroaig remains an operating distillery and its current official material identifies Barry MacAffer as Distillery Manager from 2022.

Production context

Laphroaig states that its original kilns remain in use and its distillery currently has seven stills. The site is known for maintaining some floor malting and for using peat smoke as part of its malt preparation.

Peat smoke helps create the phenolic character associated with Laphroaig, but the final whisky also reflects fermentation, distillation, spirit cuts and maturation. The distillery name therefore does not make every bottling identical.

Laphroaig is a useful example of why peat should be understood as a production input rather than a single flavour. Its whiskies are often described with smoke, medicinal and maritime associations, yet those descriptions remain sensory language rather than literal ingredient lists.
